Foundation

According to the wishes of its founder, the HNF should not be a “dead museum”, but a “living institution”. As such, each exhibition presents a selection of Helmut Newton’s innovative, provocative images in dialogue with works by the very best photographers of our time, f.i. in juxtaposition with David Lachapelle and James Nachtwey, with Larry Clark and Ralph Gibson, Greg Gorman and Frank Horvat, with Mario Testino and Guy Bourdin, with Sarah Moon and Paolo Roversi, with David Lynch and Saul Leiter – this dialogue will be proceeding.

The popularity of the exhibitions has allowed the HNF to establish itself as an dynamic new part of Berlin’s cultural scene. The addition of a stunning setting, plus a permanent display entitled Helmut Newton’s Private Property, make the foundation a must-see for anyone visiting this exciting city. Due to the close collaboration with C/O Berlin and the Collection of Photography of the Art Library the three institutions in two buildings create an unique photo-cluster in Germany. The European Month of Photography has been hosted in the fall of 2016 and 2018 by these institutions in West-Berlin.

The Newton Foundation not only organizes exhibitions in Berlin but also in other renowned museums and institutions abroad, in Amsterdam (Foam), Budapest (Museum of Fine Arts), Genova (Palazzo Ducale), Houston (Museum of Fine Arts), Milan (Palazzo Reale), Munich (Hypo-Kunsthalle), Paris (Grand Palais), Rome (Palazzo delle Espositioni), Stockholm (Fotografiska), Venice (Tre Oci) and Montreal (Museum of Fine Arts) among others. This will go on also in the future.

Founded in 2003 by Helmut Newton and long recognized as a singular cultural institution, the Newton Foundation has evolved considerably. What began as a Berlin-based foundation has, over the years, grown into a global presence, with internationally touring exhibitions and ongoing collaborations with renowned international collections and luxury brands.

Whether in traditional museum settings, at photography festivals, or in interdisciplinary contexts within fashion and lifestyle, the impact of Helmut Newton’s work remains as powerful and relevant as ever, even 22 years after his death. The well-known saying holds that behind – or, in our case, beside – a famous man stands a strong woman: June Newton, a.k.a. Alice Springs. Her remarkable photographic work is just as close to our hearts as Helmut Newton’s own.

And now, his first name steps back in our new name, logo, and design, making room for them both. Welcome to the Newton Foundation.

The Newton Foundation was established by Helmut Newton himself at the end of 2003. It is a Foundation registered according to swiss law in Zurich, Switzerland. The HNF is an international foundation dedicated to the promotion, preservation and presentation of the photographic works of Helmut and June Newton, who under the name of Alice Springs has also produced a significant body of portraiture photography since 1970. At its inception, Helmut Newton endowed the foundation with numerous original photographs that comprise a significant proportion of his artistic work.

In October 2003, the HNF entered into a formal agreement with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz) that allows the Newton Foundation unlimited use of the ground and first floors of the former military casino in Berlin-Charlottenburg (Landwehrkasino) for exhibition purposes.

Various aspects of Newton’s multifaceted, innovative and provocative works will be presented over a series of exhibitions. The works of other artists and photographers will also be presented in dialogue with Newton’s work.

The HNF benefits from a world-class architectural setting: a former Prussian officer’s casino in Berlin-Charlottenburg, in the historic center of West Berlin. Following a period of renovation, this beautiful building was re-opened to the public in June 2004, with the exhibitions Us and Them and Sex and Landscapes. Since then almost 2 million visitors have enjoyed the photography shows on display in the 1,500 square meters of exhibition space.

Due to a public-private partnership with the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation, an additional photo institution – the Collection of Photography of the Art Library / States Museums of Art – occupies the upper two floors, including the former “emperor’s ballroom”.

The Collection of Photography of the Art Library is located on the second floor of the museum, in the so called Kaisersaal.
